I think that’s the secret to learning any language—you have to enjoy the journey and feel like you’re making progress. When you’re excited to see yourself improving, studying stops feeling like another item on your to-do list. Instead, it becomes something you actually look forward to.
That wasn’t always the case for me.
When I was learning Spanish, and even during the early months of learning Russian, consistency was difficult. I would start off motivated, but eventually frustration would creep in because I didn’t feel like I was getting any closer to my real goal: speaking and understanding the language in conversation.
Many of the apps I tried focused heavily on reading, spelling, grammar, and typing answers into blanks. I’d be asked to correctly type a missing word in a sentence that I couldn’t even say out loud yet.
For me, that felt backwards.
My goal has never been to become an expert at writing Russian. My goal has always been much simpler:
Hear it. Understand it. Respond naturally.
Finding the right learning tools completely changed my experience.
I have to give a lot of credit to Pimsleur. (I’m not an affiliate… yet, but hopefully someday!)
Pimsleur helped me build the confidence to actually start speaking. At first it felt awkward hearing my own voice speaking Russian, but over time that awkwardness disappeared. I found myself talking around the house in Russian without thinking about it.
Honestly, I’ve probably had more conversations in Russian with my dog than with anyone else.
And that’s perfectly okay.
Every time I forced myself to think of the Russian words before speaking them, I was building the habit I really wanted: communicating instead of translating.
That feeling of progress kept me coming back every day.
My Daily Routine
My routine starts before everyone else wakes up.
I grab a cup of coffee, sit down somewhere quiet, and spend about 30–45 minutes studying Russian. Lately I’ve been using Praktika during my morning sessions because I enjoy the conversational practice.
Throughout the day, I’ll often listen to Pimsleur while driving or taking a walk. It’s a great way to squeeze in more listening and speaking practice without needing extra study time.
Then there’s GovoriNow, which I’ve built alongside my own language-learning journey.
I use GovoriNow throughout the day to quickly review vocabulary and common phrases whenever I have a few spare minutes. Before bed, I’ll usually spend another 10–15 minutes reviewing phrases one last time.
Instead of relying on one app to do everything, I use each one for what it does best.
Praktika helps me practice conversations.
Pimsleur strengthens my listening and speaking skills.
GovoriNow helps me memorize the words and phrases I actually want to remember and use.
Together they keep learning fresh, interesting, and something I genuinely look forward to.
The Biggest Lesson I’ve Learned
Learning a language is not easy for me.
I’m not naturally gifted with languages.
But I’ve learned that consistency beats intensity every single time.
You don’t need to study for four hours in one sitting.
You just need to keep showing up.
Some days it’s 45 minutes.
Some days it’s 10.
The important part is keeping the momentum alive.
Every word you remember, every phrase you recognize, and every conversation you attempt is another step toward fluency.
That’s exactly why I built GovoriNow—to create the kind of learning experience that I wished I had from the very beginning.
If it helps even one person stay consistent and enjoy the journey a little more, then it’s already been worth it.
