Someone asks us a question and we say:

“Hmm…”

“Let’s see…”

“Well…”

“I think…”

“I’m not sure…”

Those phrases give our brains time to think.

Russian has them too.

Ну…
noo…
Well…

Так…
tak…
So / let’s see…

Я думаю…
ya DÚ-ma-yu…
I think…

Не знаю…
nye ZNÁ-yu…
I don’t know…

Сейчас…
see-CHÁS…
One moment / now…

These little phrases are incredibly useful because silence feels much longer when you’re the person trying to answer.

Saying:

Ну… я думаю…

gives your brain another couple of seconds to find what comes next.

You’re still communicating while your brain searches.
